Viator in brief
Viator started in 1995 in San Francisco. Tripadvisor bought it in August 2014 for about US$192 million, announced at the time as roughly US$200 million. Over 2025 and 2026, Tripadvisor merged its main brand operations with Viator, cut about 20% of its staff (around 450 people), and now reports an “Experiences” segment. Activist investors have pushed for a Viator spin-off, but none has been announced.
None of that changes how a ticket works at the Joypolis gate. What it does mean is that Viator is a big, established business, not a pop-up reseller.
We have no affiliate relationship with Viator and earn nothing from it. The buttons on this page go to Klook and GetYourGuide, which pay us a commission.
The numbers, and what they measure
As checked in September 2026, Viator has 4.5 on Trustpilot from 332,268 reviews, the largest sample of any platform we cover. The US App Store rating is 4.92 from about 289K ratings. By either measure, most customers are satisfied.
The complaints fall into four groups: operators cancelling at short notice, unclear ticket delivery, a strict 24-hour refund cutoff, and overbooking. Operator cancellations and overbooking are tour problems rather than gate-ticket problems. For Odaiba tickets, a different issue matters more.
The reseller maze
On Viator, one venue is often sold by several resellers. Search for teamLab Planets TOKYO and you’ll see several listings for what is the same entry ticket. They differ in:
- Price. Near-identical listings can be priced differently for the same entry.
- Refund terms. Some teamLab listings are fully non-refundable. Others may be more flexible.
- Delivery. Check how and when the ticket or QR arrives.
This isn’t unique to Viator, but its catalogue is built so that you notice it more. Before you pay, open the listing’s details and read three lines: who the supplier is, the cancellation policy, and how you get into the venue.
For teamLab Planets in particular, the official DMM store is usually the better buy. The venue gives no refunds on any channel, but the official store lets you move an Entrance Pass to another date up to 2 hours before entry, at most 3 times. A reseller ticket bought for a fixed date doesn’t give you that.

Odaiba gate tickets on Viator
Tokyo Joypolis. Viator carries at least two listings: an “Odaiba Joypolis Ticket” and a Joypolis Passport. Viator is not on the park’s list of official overseas online sellers, which names Klook, Trip.com, KKday and Rakuten Travel Experiences. That doesn’t make Viator’s tickets invalid, but it does mean a reseller sits between you and the park. Check whether the voucher is scanned at the gate or has to be exchanged at a counter first. For reference, the official adult Passport is ¥6,000 and entry only is ¥1,700.
Tokyo Trick Art Museum. Viator lists an attraction ticket. The museum doesn’t sell online itself, and the door price is ¥1,200 for adults. Compare the listing price with that before bothering with a voucher.
teamLab Planets. Covered above. It’s in Toyosu, at Shin-Toyosu station on the Yurikamome line, not on Odaiba island. Our teamLab Planets guide explains how to combine it with an Odaiba day.
Where Viator is a good choice: tours
Viator works well for experiences with a guide, a meeting point and a group size. For an Odaiba trip, that means street go-kart tours over Rainbow Bridge and Tokyo Bay cruises. It is a comfortable choice if you already use Tripadvisor at home.
Two Odaiba-specific points apply wherever you book:
- Street karts. Tours need a paper 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit together with your home licence and passport. Card, digital or photocopied permits are rejected, and so are 1968 Vienna Convention permits. Arrive without the right documents and you won’t drive or get a refund. Without a valid permit, CITY CIRCUIT TOKYO BAY in Aomi is a closed track that needs no licence. See our go-kart guide.
- Cruises. Symphony cruises leave from Hinode Pier, 1 minute from Hinode station on the Yurikamome line. Our Tokyo Bay cruise page compares the options.
-

Before you pay: four checks
These take two minutes on any Viator listing for an Odaiba venue.
- Supplier. Note who actually supplies the ticket. If two listings for the same venue have different suppliers, treat them as different products.
- Cancellation line. Terms vary by listing. Where cancellation is allowed, reviewers complain that the 24-hour cutoff is strictly applied. If your Odaiba day depends on the weather, for example a cruise or the Rainbow Bridge walk, which closes in strong wind, decide before the cutoff.
- Entry method. Look for whether the QR is scanned directly at the gate or has to be exchanged at a counter. An exchange adds a queue.
- Official price. Compare with the gate price in yen: Joypolis Passport ¥6,000, Trick Art ¥1,200, teamLab Planets adult from ¥4,200 on the official store, varying by date.
If a listing fails any of these, the same venue is usually available through another channel, often the official one.
Pros and cons for Odaiba

|---|---|

| Tours (karts, cruises) | Good fit |
| Gate tickets | Sold by several resellers; terms vary |
| Official seller status | Not on Joypolis’s official list |
| Refunds | Per listing; some teamLab tickets fully non-refundable |
Who should use Viator
Use Viator if you’re from the US or UK, already book through Tripadvisor, and want a guided experience such as a kart tour or a cruise. The scale of its review base is reassuring for that kind of booking.
For Odaiba gate tickets, it’s rarely the easiest route. Klook sells Joypolis as an official seller, the teamLab official store offers date changes, and walking up to the Trick Art Museum costs ¥1,200. If you do buy a gate ticket on Viator, choose the listing by its supplier and refund line rather than by the first price you see. Our operators overview and GetYourGuide review set out the alternatives.
Questions visitors ask
Is Viator reliable for Odaiba tickets?
Viator is a large, established marketplace with a 4.5 Trustpilot score from over 330,000 reviews. The risk is not the platform but the reseller: terms differ between near-identical listings for the same venue, so read the cancellation line on the listing you pick.
Why does Viator show several teamLab Planets tickets at different prices?
Several resellers list the same venue. Price and refund terms vary, and some teamLab listings are fully non-refundable. The official DMM store allows date changes up to 2 hours before entry, which resellers usually don't.
Is Viator an official Joypolis seller?
No. Joypolis names Klook, Trip.com, KKday and Rakuten Travel Experiences as its official overseas online sellers. Viator's Joypolis tickets come through a reseller.
Can I book an Odaiba go-kart tour on Viator?
Viator works well for tours like go-karts, but the rules come from the kart operator. Street kart tours need a paper 1949 Geneva Convention IDP; 1968 Vienna IDPs are refused, with no refund. See our go-kart guide.
Is Viator the same as Tripadvisor?
Viator is owned by Tripadvisor, which bought it in August 2014 and has since merged its main brand operations with Viator.
